Payout Reversals

Modem Pay allows you to reverse eligible payout transfers, subject to the following restrictions:

  • Supported Network: Reversals are only available for payouts made to Wave mobile money recipients.
  • Reversal Window: You must request the reversal within 3 days (72 hours) of the original payout. Requests after this window cannot be processed.
  • Recipient Balance Requirement: The recipient of the payout must still have the full funds in their Wave account for the reversal to be completed. If the recipient has withdrawn or spent the funds, the reversal will not succeed.
  • Eligibility: Only completed transfers are eligible for reversal.
  • Terms: Terms and conditions may apply.

Note: Reversal requests are not subject to additional review by Modem Pay. If the requirements above are met, the reversal will be processed automatically.

Reversal Endpoint

To request a reversal, send a POST request to:

POST https://api.modempay.com/h2h/v1/transfers/reverse/:reference
  • :reference — Provide either the id or the transfer_reference of the payout you want to reverse.

Example Request

curl -X POST https://api.modempay.com/h2h/v1/transfers/reverse/pt-5Np7iVHrN \
-H "Authorization: Bearer sk_test_..."

A successful response will include details of the reversal operation and its status.

Webhook Notification: When a payout is successfully reversed, a transfer.reversed webhook event will be sent to your configured webhook endpoint. The event will contain the transfer information with the status set to reversed.

Important

  • Reversals are possible only if:
    • The original payout was made to Wave.
    • The request is within 3 days of the payout.
    • The recipient still has the original payout amount in their Wave account.
  • Terms and conditions may apply. Modem Pay reserves the right to update reversal requirements at any time; see the Terms & Conditions.
